Residency and Fellowships
The Department of Family Medicine has operated the longest continuous general
practice training program in the country. We've been actively involved in family
medicine training since the inception of Family Medicine as a specialty,
currently supporting four separate but affiliated residency programs. You can
read more below about how our residency programs interact.
In addition to our residency programs, we offer
Four residency programs are affiliated with the Department of
Family Medicine:
Collaborating to Train Great Family Physicians
The graduates of these programs are highly prepared to care for patients
in a variety of settings and to understand the challenges of our changing
medical environment. These programs have different emphases in the skills
they teach and the patient populations they serve. All programs share
a common set of guiding principles and the faculty work closely together
to enhance the common educational activities.
A graduate medical education (GME) committee composed of the four residency
directors and a GME director, works together on curriculum
for these programs, faculty development, resident recruitment, and operating
policies. Collectively, they are responsible for at least 54 residents at any
given time. The clinic homes of each residency program actively participate
in practice-based research as members of CaReNet.
All provide medical student education (see below).
