Family Medicine Residencies

Three residency programs are affiliated with the Department of Family Medicine:

University of Colorado Family Medicine Residency is a two-track residency that emphasizes community medicine in a managed care setting, as well as building skills in the care of urban underserved and culturally diverse patients.

Rose Medical Center Residency emphasizes the care of the whole person in the context of family and community.

Swedish Medical Center Residency offers a unique curriculum and unopposed, longitudinal hospital training on the Family Medicine Inpatient Service at Swedish Medical Center.

The Department of Family Medicine has operated the longest continuous general practice training program in the country. We've been actively involved in Family Medicine training since the inception of Family Medicine as a specialty, currently supporting four separate but affiliated residency programs. You can read more below about how our residency programs interact. In addition to our residency programs, we offer

Collaborating to Train Great Family Physicians

The graduates of these programs are highly prepared to care for patients in a variety of settings and to understand the challenges of our changing medical environment. These programs have different emphases in the skills they teach and the patient populations they serve. All programs share a common set of guiding principles and the faculty work closely together to enhance the common educational activities.

A graduate medical education committee is composed of the three residency directors (or their representatives), two fellowship directors, and the vice-chair for education, who work together on curriculum for these programs, faculty development, resident recruitment, and operating policies. Collectively, they are responsible for at least 54 residents and 3-5 fellows at any given time. The clinic homes of each residency program actively participate in practice-based research networks. All provide medical student education.
